Dr Joseph Symonds
EPI-SCOT Chief Investigator

Joe is a paediatric neurology doctor at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow. He specialises in the care of children and young people with epilepsy. His research has focussed on identifying and describing genetic causes of epilepsy. Joe grew up in Cumbria, studied medicine at the University of Dundee and did his PhD at the University of Glasgow. He has worked as a doctor/paediatrician in the Borders, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Inverness, Glasgow, Forth Valley, Ayrshire, Lanarkshire, and Dumfries and Galloway! When he's not working Joe's favourite hobbies are running and cycling up and down mountains.

Professor Sameer Zuberi
Neurosciences Research Group Lead

Sameer is an Honorary Professor of Paediatric Neurology at the University of Glasgow and a Consultant at the Royal Hospital for Children. He specialises in the care of children epilepsy and other neurological disorders. Sameer went to school in Ilkley, West Yorkshire and after coming to Edinburgh to study medicine, worked in paediatrics in Edinburgh and Glasgow with one year in Sydney, Australia. His postgraduate thesis was on discovering genetic causes of epilepsy and movement disorders. Outside of work he enjoys running, reading, exploring the world, listening to history podcasts, playing vinyl records and singing very badly at Anfield stadium, Liverpool.


Professor Liam Dorris
Consultant Paediatric Neuropsychologist

Liam is a Consultant Neuropsychologist at the Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow and an Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Glasgow.  As well as being lead clinician for the NHS paediatric neuropsychology service, Dr Dorris leads a clinical research group looking at cognitive disorders and psychosocial issues in paediatric neurological and neurodevelopmental conditions

Ms Isla Birnie
Research Manager

Isla is our Research Manager for the Paediatric Neurosciences Research Group. She has worked with teams in the Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow since 2012. In her spare time, Isla also volunteers with the Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity. Isla’s dog, Cooper, will often join us at the office! When Isla is not working, she enjoys reading, visiting new places and taking Cooper on long walks.
